A STYLISH AND FUNCTIONAL
MIDCENTURY RENOVATION.

Nestled in the vibrant neighbourhood of Sunnyside, this home needed love. Formerly owned by a senior citizen (grab bars and 90’s honey oak included), the space was cramped and outdated, and had sat collecting dust for over a year. But with an unbeatable inner-city location and abundant natural light, we knew it had huge potential to become something spectacular. And our clients, a young couple expecting their first baby, saw the potential too.

We completely revamped the layout to maximize efficiency and functionality. Every square inch was meticulously evaluated, resulting in a plan that opened up the kitchen and seamlessly integrated pantry storage, a coffee station, a powder room, and a coat closet into one central block of cabinetry.

The kitchen, clad from head-to-toe in walnut cabinetry with matching walnut pulls, was opened up to the living/dining area, becoming the focal point of the main floor. This allowed us to incorporate a large rounded island with open shelving to showcase the client’s ample plant and book collection. Positioned prominently near the entryway, the coffee station boasts an Elektra coffee maker, adding a touch of luxury and convenience to the client’s daily routine.

The cabinetry wraps around into the front living area, creating shelves for records and more space for the client’s plants and books. It also houses the door to the powder room, tucked away but no less of a feature — with green patterned wallpaper, a floating walnut vanity, and amber sconces, this space is a special moment all on its own.

The back living room acts as the perfect sitting space for a morning coffee, showcasing handmade tile on the fireplace and a rounded floor tile feature (meant to offer some durability at the patio door, especially in those slushy winter months). The original wood ceiling makes a quiet statement above the fireplace, adding more warmth to a cozy space.

With a focus on practicality and aesthetic appeal, this renovation breathed new life into a once-neglected space, transforming it into a haven of style and functionality for its occupants (now a family of three!).
